UPDATE: Werribee Football Club has just announced the signing of three new players as it gears up for the 2026 Victorian Football League (VFL) season. In a significant move, Massimo Raso joins the team from Richmond, where he had a standout inaugural season in 2025, netting 26 goals as a small forward.
The 19-year-old Raso displayed remarkable skill, winning Richmond’s VFL leading goalkicking award and becoming a finalist for the prestigious Fothergill-Round-Mitchell Medal, which honors the VFL’s most promising young talent. He averaged 12.6 disposals per game across 20 matches, showcasing his ability to impact the game with a season-high of 24 disposals against Sandringham.
Werribee’s football manager, Kyle Hartigan, expressed enthusiasm about Raso’s potential, stating, “Massimo is a dynamic player who will enhance our forward line.” Raso’s impressive performances, including multiple three-goal games and a key role in Richmond’s wildcard final victory over GWS, have positioned him as a vital addition to Werribee’s roster.
In addition to Raso, Werribee has also secured Lachie Charleson, a 20-year-old forward fresh from a two-year stint with Port Adelaide. Charleson, selected at pick 52 in the 2023 AFL draft, has accumulated 31 games in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL), scoring 28 goals over the past two seasons. Hartigan praised Charleson, saying, “He is a flashy forward who adds to our growing group of small forwards.”
The third signing, Sam Donegan, is a versatile 22-year-old forward with experience in the VFL, having played 25 games including 13 in 2025. Joining from the Northern Bullants, Donegan is expected to bring depth to the squad and can also push into the midfield when needed.
These strategic signings come as Werribee seeks to strengthen its lineup following the departures of key players including Zac Banch and Flynn Young, who were selected in the mid-season draft, and the retirement of Angus Hicks. The club’s proactive recruitment strategy signals a commitment to building a competitive team for the upcoming season.
As the 2026 VFL season approaches, Werribee fans can expect an exciting and revamped squad, with the potential for significant improvements on the field. The team aims to capitalize on the fresh talent and energy brought by Raso, Charleson, and Donegan, making this a pivotal moment in the club’s journey.
Stay tuned for more updates as Werribee prepares for what promises to be an exhilarating season ahead!
