SupaMed has introduced the world’s first saliva-based pregnancy test, SaliStickTM, now available at pharmacies and Coles stores across Australia. This innovative product marks a significant advancement in pregnancy testing, the first of its kind in over 70 years since the popularization of at-home urine tests in the 1960s.

The SaliStickTM test allows women to confirm pregnancy in a hygienic and non-invasive manner within just 15 minutes. Developed by Salignostics, the test detects the presence of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a hormone indicative of pregnancy, through a simple mouth swab. This breakthrough has already gained international recognition, being featured by TIME Magazine as one of the Best Inventions of 2023.

Transforming the Pregnancy Testing Landscape

Michael Cima, Director of SupaMed, expressed pride in introducing such a meaningful innovation to the Australian market. “We’ve observed a significant shift towards non-invasive saliva tests since the onset of COVID-19,” he noted. “During this period, we ensured that Australians had access to over 60 million saliva tests.”

The appeal of saliva testing lies in its user-friendliness and convenience. According to Cima, this trend is increasingly reflected in pregnancy testing products, allowing women to share the news of their pregnancy with loved ones more easily. He claims that SaliStickTM is a genuinely disruptive product, fundamentally changing how women approach pregnancy testing.

Traditionally, women have relied on urine tests or medical blood tests to confirm pregnancy. Until recently, saliva’s potential in pregnancy testing remained largely unexplored. Saliva contains over 5,000 proteins, many of which are also found in blood, providing a reliable alternative for testing.

Accuracy and Market Demand

Clinical testing of the SaliStickTM has validated its accuracy, showing rates of 96% one day after a missed period and 97% two days after. Dr. Anita Sharma, a General Practitioner and the Medical Director at Platinum Medical Centre, emphasized the importance of early and accurate detection in women’s health. “Saliva-based tests deliver on both fronts,” she stated.

Market research indicates strong consumer interest, with 68% of women expressing a preference for saliva-based tests over traditional urine tests. An additional 21% were open to using either method, highlighting a clear demand for more accessible and convenient options.

Pharmacist Ms. Riley Price from Chempro Chemists added that convenience, comfort, and privacy are critical when it comes to reproductive health. She confirmed that market trends indicate a clear preference for innovative products that align with modern lifestyles. “We are here to support our customers at every stage of their family planning journey,” she said.

The process of using the SaliStickTM involves three straightforward steps, making it an easy option for those seeking to confirm pregnancy. With its launch, SupaMed aims to redefine the landscape of pregnancy testing, providing women with a reliable alternative that emphasizes both accuracy and convenience.
