Nominations are now open for the 2025 City of Whittlesea Community Awards, recognizing outstanding contributions from local citizens. The awards will honor a citizen, young citizen, senior citizen, as well as an access and inclusion citizen, and a sustainable environment citizen or group. This initiative aims to highlight the efforts of individuals who have positively impacted their community.
Lawrie Cox, the Mayor of Whittlesea, is encouraging residents to nominate those who have made significant contributions. “Whether it’s volunteering, supporting neighbors, protecting our environment, or inspiring change, the City of Whittlesea is home to so many remarkable people,” he stated. Mayor Cox emphasized that these awards serve as a platform to celebrate the everyday heroes who enhance the lives of others.
Evaluation Process and Committee Formation
The nomination process will be assessed by a dedicated community award committee. This committee comprises one councillor, a non-voting member from the council’s executive leadership team, community members, and award recipients from the previous year. During the council meeting on November 18, 2024, six new community members were appointed to the committee, with their terms extending until October 2028.
The significance of the awards extends beyond mere recognition. Zachary Melvaine, the recipient of the 2024 Young Citizen of the Year award, shared his sentiments about the honor. “It’s humbling to know my efforts are being recognized. It gives me a boost to keep giving back,” he remarked, illustrating the motivational impact of such acknowledgments.
Awards Ceremony and Important Dates
The 2025 Community Awards will culminate in a ceremony at the annual community festival, scheduled for March 15, 2026. To participate, residents must submit their nominations by February 15, 2026. Those interested in nominating a community member can find more information and submission guidelines at the official website: whittlesea.vic.gov.au/communityawards.
This initiative not only honors individuals but also seeks to foster a sense of community spirit and engagement in the City of Whittlesea. By recognizing the contributions of its citizens, the awards aim to inspire further acts of kindness and commitment to the community.
