Kia Unveils Adventurous EV5 WKNDR Concept at Guangzhou Motor Show

The new Kia EV5 WKNDR concept made its world debut at the Guangzhou Motor Show in China, showcasing the off-road capabilities of the Korean automaker’s mid-size electric SUV. This model marks the fourth WKNDR concept introduced by Kia, following similar rugged designs based on the Tasman ute, the EV9 large electric SUV, and the PV5 electric van.

Kia’s design team in China has equipped the EV5 WKNDR with an array of robust features aimed at outdoor enthusiasts. Notable additions include substantial front and rear bumpers, functional roof racks that extend to tool mounts, and pronounced wheel arches housing aggressive 20-inch wheels fitted with mud tyres. The concept also boasts retractable yellow recovery points at both ends and a significant suspension lift that enhances its off-road potential.

Inside, the adventurous spirit continues with bold yellow accents on the octagonal steering wheel, center console, door panels, and newly designed seats. The cabin incorporates eco-friendly BIO PU materials, emphasizing Kia’s commitment to sustainability. The rear seats can be folded down or removed entirely, providing a flat load space ideal for camping gear, complete with yellow straps and sliding mounts.

Kia has included several camping-oriented features in the EV5 WKNDR, such as a tailgate that doubles as a camp table, ambient lighting, a built-in radio, and binoculars. A one-touch mode is said to automate route plotting, suggest charging stops, and highlight points of interest for nature lovers, aligning with the concept’s weekend getaway theme.

While specific technical details for the EV5 WKNDR remain undisclosed, it is expected to be based on the flagship all-wheel-drive GT-Line variant. This version is priced at approximately $71,770 in Australia, equipped with dual electric motors that produce a combined output of 230 kW and 480 Nm of torque, powered by an 88 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery.

The broader MY26 Kia EV5 lineup starts at $56,770 for the entry-level 2WD Standard Range variant, featuring a single motor with 160 kW of power and 310 Nm of torque, supported by a 64 kWh LFP battery.

Notably, this concept is expected to enter production, as reported by Chinese industry analyst Tycho de Feijter, though a timeline for its release has yet to be confirmed. As Kia continues to innovate within the electric vehicle market, the EV5 WKNDR stands out as a promising option for adventure seekers looking to explore the outdoors in an eco-friendly manner.
