JMU Achieves Top Rankings in Shanghai’s 2025 Global Academic Survey

The Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (JMU) has excelled in the latest Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) for 2025, released by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy. This year, JMU has made notable strides in fields such as Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, Medical Technology, Biological Sciences, and Physics, solidifying its reputation as a leading research institution.

The Shanghai Ranking evaluates over 2,000 universities across more than 100 countries in **57 different research fields**. Institutions are assessed based on the quantity and citation impact of their scientific publications, international collaborations, and recognition through prestigious research awards. JMU’s performance reflects its commitment to excellence in research.

In the field of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, which encompasses Pharmacy, Pharmacology, Medicinal Chemistry, and Toxicology, JMU stands out with a global ranking of **42nd** and is placed **2nd in Germany**. The university also leads in Bavaria for this discipline. Notably, JMU excels in the High-Quality Research indicator, which measures the number of influential articles published in top-tier journals, achieving a remarkable score of **67.3**, the highest in Germany.

Strong Performances Across Multiple Disciplines

JMU’s achievements extend beyond pharmacy. In Medical Technology, which includes laboratory technologies, neuroimaging, and nuclear medicine, the university ranks **55th worldwide** and is among the top ten in Germany, coming in at **3rd in Bavaria**. The Biological Sciences field sees JMU ranked **95th globally**, placing it among the top five universities in Germany and **3rd in Bavaria**.

These results emphasize JMU’s international standing, as it ranks in the top ten percent worldwide in additional fields such as Clinical Medicine, Ecology, and Communication. Paul Pauli, the President of JMU, commented on the rankings, stating, “The Shanghai Subject Rankings once again confirm the excellent work of our researchers. It clearly shows that our research is visible and successful not only nationally but also internationally – a strong signal for the future course of the Excellence Competition.”

The accomplishments of JMU in the GRAS 2025 highlight its significant contributions to various disciplines, underscoring its role as a prominent institution in global academic research. As JMU continues to forge ahead, its recognition in these rankings serves as an indicator of its ongoing impact in the world of higher education and research.
