Lady Gaga Advocates for Drag Queen Scenes in A Star Is Born

In a recent revelation, drag performer Willam disclosed that pop icon Lady Gaga played a crucial role in preserving the iconic drag queen scenes in the 2018 film A Star Is Born. Originally, these vital scenes were on the chopping block, but Gaga’s intervention ensured their inclusion in the final cut.

Willam, known for competing on the reality series RuPaul’s Drag Race, shared the backstory during an interview with the Daily Mail. He recounted a moment of distress when he received a text message announcing that his scenes, alongside fellow Drag Race star Shangela, had been cut from the film.

“I was at Tom Daley’s wedding and between the rehearsal dinner and the ceremony, I get a text saying ‘Terrible, terrible news, all your scenes have been cut,’” Willam explained. This news shocked the drag community and fans alike, as the scenes featured the queens performing in the drag bar where Gaga’s character, Ally, showcases her talent.

Fortunately for fans, Lady Gaga’s advocacy reversed the decision to cut the scenes. Willam expressed gratitude for her involvement, noting that the drag performances added a vibrant and unexpected dimension to the film’s opening sequence. The inclusion of these scenes not only enhanced the film’s energy but also celebrated the drag community in a prominent way.

In an earlier interview, Willam praised Bradley Cooper, who directed the film, highlighting that he encouraged the drag queens to improvise their lines during filming. This creative freedom contributed to the authentic and lively atmosphere of the bar scenes.

The positive reception of A Star Is Born demonstrated the impact of Gaga’s commitment to representation in the film industry. By standing up for the inclusion of drag performances, she not only supported her fellow artists but also helped to create a more inclusive portrayal of diverse talents on the big screen.

As the film continues to resonate with audiences, the collaboration between Gaga, Willam, and Shangela serves as a reminder of the importance of advocacy for representation within the entertainment industry.
