Siblings Charged After Car Theft and Police Pursuit in NSW

Two siblings face serious charges following an alleged car theft and a subsequent police chase in northeast New South Wales. A 13-year-old boy and his 12-year-old sister were apprehended after the incident, which unfolded shortly after noon on July 10, 2023.

The situation began when police received a report of a stolen vehicle from an automotive business located on Vivian Street in Inverell. Officers quickly located the vehicle on Byron Lane, where the boy, who was driving, reportedly rammed into a police car before fleeing the scene. This act initiated a short police pursuit.

The chase concluded shortly thereafter when the stolen vehicle collided with another car on Laurence Street. Paramedics arrived on the scene to treat the siblings for minor injuries, after which they were transported to Inverell District Hospital. Authorities confirmed that no individuals in the other vehicle sustained injuries during the incident.

In the aftermath, the boy was charged with multiple offenses, including taking and driving a vehicle without the owner’s consent, negligent driving, and using an offensive weapon to evade arrest. He has been denied bail and is scheduled to appear in a Children’s Court on July 11, 2023.

His sister was charged with being carried in a vehicle without the owner’s consent. She received conditional bail and is expected to appear in a Children’s Court on August 7, 2023.

In light of this incident, police are calling for any witnesses or individuals with additional information to reach out to Crime Stoppers.
