UPDATE: A shocking act of vandalism has triggered a significant outage for Optus, impacting emergency service calls for over 14,322 customers in the Frankston and Mornington Peninsula regions, southeast of Melbourne. The incident, which occurred earlier today, has left many residents unable to reach emergency services, raising urgent concerns about public safety.
According to Optus spokeswoman Jane McNamara, crews are actively working to restore service, with five out of six affected sites already back online. McNamara expressed frustration over the incident, stating, “Our technicians have been on site since early this morning. We do have that photo evidence and it’s clear that there had been a cut made.” She confirmed that criminals had severed a crucial aerial fibre line, directly affecting connectivity for thousands.
The ongoing outage has severe implications, as customers can only reach emergency services if they fall within the coverage of another network or can utilize WiFi. Optus’s website confirms the extent of the disruption, emphasizing that many customers are currently stranded without reliable means to contact emergency responders.
In response to the crisis, Premier Jacinta Allan has called for urgent updates on the situation, stressing the critical nature of maintaining communication for emergency services. “There are too many people out in the community experiencing an outage that may be impacting their ability to contact emergency services,” she told reporters. The Premier acknowledged the community’s concerns, especially in light of recent incidents involving Optus.
This outage marks the fourth significant disruption in just a few months, sparking outrage among customers who rely on Optus for vital communication. Just last month, a scheduled firewall upgrade in South Australia caused another outage linked to the tragic deaths of three Australians, where 600 triple zero calls were blocked from connecting to emergency services. Optus CEO Stephen Rue attributed that incident to human error.
As technicians race against time to restore full service, the situation remains fluid. Authorities continue to investigate the vandalism, and police have been notified about the incident. The community is urged to remain vigilant and seek alternative means of communication as restoration efforts proceed.
