Craigieburn Man Raises $1,500 for Gaza Aid Through Recycling

UPDATE: A remarkable initiative is unfolding in Craigieburn, where local resident Mohammed Kalassina has raised $1,500 for Gaza aid by recycling 15,000 bottles through the Victorian Container Deposit Scheme. This urgent effort highlights how everyday actions can significantly impact those in need, especially amidst the ongoing crisis in Gaza.

Kalassina, who has been diligently recycling for the past year and a half, never anticipated that his efforts would contribute to humanitarian aid. “I never guessed … that something as basic as a few empty cans or bottles can mean survival for someone else,” he stated.

This grassroots movement has gained momentum, with community members rallying to support Kalassina’s cause. “It’s gotten more and more popular … with people giving me their containers … we all pull our cans and bottles together,” he explained. His efforts not only benefit the environment but also provide critical support for a humanitarian mission.

The group is currently raising up to $500 a month, which is donated to Muslims Around The World, a charity organization that delivers essential aid to over 30 countries, providing food, water, and medical supplies. “The work they do is close to my heart and has been something I’ve supported for years to get aid directly to people who need it most,” Kalassina shared.

Kalassina’s commitment to charity is deeply rooted in his values. He emphasized the Islamic principle of giving back to those in need, stating, “Part of Islam is the idea of giving back to those in need and helping people to get back on their feet… there’s no shortage of people who need help.”

Having lived in Craigieburn for over 16 years, Kalassina’s journey in fundraising began during high school when he sold chocolates to raise funds for water wells in Vanuatu. His message to others considering similar initiatives is clear: “Just do your part… if you have the means to help others, you also have a responsibility. If we all put our hands together, we can do something to make a better community.”

This inspiring story illustrates the power of community action and the incredible impact one individual’s efforts can have on a global scale. For those interested in contributing to this cause, Kalassina encourages everyone to find their nearest container refund point by visiting: cdsvic.org.au.

As the situation in Gaza continues to develop, collective efforts like Kalassina’s remind us of the difference we can make when we come together for a common cause.
