Bob Geldof Honored with Official Charts Award for Live Aid Musical

Bob Geldof has been awarded a prestigious honor by the Official Charts Company for his contributions to the album Just For One Day – the Live Aid Musical. The album features iconic tracks from renowned artists including the Boomtown Rats, U2, Sir Brian May, Sting, and Madonna. This collection has achieved remarkable success, boasting eight UK Number 1 singles and eight Number 2 hits.

Released on July 11, 2025, the Original Cast Recording commemorates the 40th anniversary of the legendary Live Aid concert, a monumental event that raised funds for famine relief in Ethiopia. The album features an impressive lineup of artists, including David Bowie, Sir Elton John, Mick Jagger (performing a duet with Bowie on “Dancing In The Street”), Phil Collins, Queen, Simple Minds, Status Quo, The Beatles, The Police, The Style Council, The Who, Ultravox, and Wham!.

A significant portion of the proceeds from the album will be donated to the Band Aid Trust, which was established to address the humanitarian crisis in Ethiopia. The Official Charts Company recognized Geldof’s efforts by bestowing upon him the Official Top 10 Award, highlighting the achievements of the Live Aid artists who contributed to the musical.

Geldof spoke passionately about the project, stating, “These are some of the greatest songs in the rock canon. It is extraordinary to think that these and dozens more were performed live by the greatest artists of the age. The Rats’ ‘I Don’t Like Mondays,’ played at Live Aid to over a billion people, took on a whole strange and different meaning.” He expressed how the musical adaptation aims to capture the essence of that historic day, allowing new audiences to experience the intensity of the performances.

The musical not only revisits classic hits but reimagines them for contemporary audiences. “Now, ‘I Don’t Like Mondays’ is re-imagined for a smaller stage for Just For One DayThe Live Aid Musical and, along with the other tunes, brilliantly rearranged for 2025 – but with the same intensity,” Geldof remarked.

Midge Ure, co-organizer of Live Aid, praised the project, stating, “By the time we got to Live Aid, Ultravox had enjoyed hits including ‘Vienna’ and ‘Dancing With Tears In My Eyes’ – both of which feature in Just For One DayThe Live Aid Musical. The adaptations of these songs, as well as other artists’ classic tracks, are superb. The show tells the Live Aid story but it is also just a thrilling night out with amazing music.”

The Just For One DayThe Live Aid Musical promises to be a celebration of music and a reminder of the power of art in the face of adversity. As audiences prepare to experience this reimagined collection, the legacy of Live Aid continues to resonate, illustrating how music can unite and inspire change.
