UPDATE: Charges Dropped, Teen Freed in Morwell Stabbing Case

BREAKING: A 19-year-old man, Tyson Fenton, has been released from custody after murder charges were abruptly dropped in connection with the stabbing death of 18-year-old Kaiden Morgan. The decision was confirmed by police on Friday, marking a significant turn in this ongoing investigation.

Fenton was accused of fatally attacking Morgan on September 27, 2023, in Morwell, located 155km east of Melbourne. The incident occurred on The Boulevard, a residential area where Morgan was found with serious stab wounds. He was rushed to the hospital but tragically died shortly after. Another victim, a 20-year-old man from Warragul, was also injured during the altercation but has survived.

Police stated that the investigation remains complex and evolving. In an official statement, they noted, “A decision was made that the charges against the 19-year-old Traralgon man would be withdrawn,” while charges against his co-accused, a 16-year-old boy whose identity cannot be revealed for legal reasons, remain in effect.

The circumstances surrounding Morgan’s death have ignited public outrage, leading to hundreds of mourners marching through Morwell in October, demanding action against Victoria’s growing knife crime epidemic. His tragic story gained attention earlier this year when he was featured in an ABC piece about the Boorun Boys, an Aboriginal dance group, where he expressed his passion for performance despite feelings of anxiety.

During a court hearing at the Latrobe Valley Magistrates Court on September 29, Fenton’s lawyer, Ben Lewtas, emphasized his client’s lack of prior criminal history and the fear he faced regarding potential retaliation while in custody. It is believed that all four individuals involved were known to each other.

As this story develops, communities are left grappling with the implications of knife violence in their neighborhoods. The public’s demand for justice and safety continues to resonate, underscoring the urgent need for effective measures to address this alarming trend.
