URGENT UPDATE: Childcare centers across Australia will close early five times a year for mandatory safety training, beginning this year. This significant move follows serious scandals in the sector, including a shocking case where a childcare worker, Joshua Dale Brown, was charged with sexually abusing eight children under the age of two.
Starting at 5 PM, centers will close their doors to implement crucial training aimed at enhancing child safety. This initiative, announced by Early Childhood Education Minister Jess Walsh, is designed to empower educators to identify and report concerning behaviors effectively.
“These measures are essential for creating a safer environment for our children,” Walsh stated, emphasizing the urgent need for change. “This is a sensible way for providers to manage new mandatory safety training.” While this new policy may inconvenience some families, centers are committed to providing ample notice regarding the closures.
The federal government will allocate $40 million to fund these training sessions and the necessary adjustments within the childcare sector. This decision aligns with broader reforms initiated in response to the allegations against Brown, who worked at 24 facilities from 2017 to 2025.
In addition to early closures, other safety measures are being introduced, including a CCTV trial in up to 300 centers and discussions around a national register of childcare workers. Currently, alleged offenders can retain their working with children checks for extended periods, but new agreements among states will enable a “national continuous checking capability.” This will utilize police databases to monitor the criminal histories of childcare professionals in near real-time.
