Urgent Campaign Launches for Permanent Prayer Space in Darwin CBD

UPDATE: A grassroots campaign to secure a permanent prayer space in the heart of the Darwin CBD is gaining significant traction as community members rally to support the $1.4 million fundraising initiative launched by the United Muslims of Northern Territory (UMNT). The effort aims to transition the currently leased Musallah into a permanent home, ensuring stability for daily prayers and community activities.

The Musallah serves as a crucial center for observances, offering daily congregational prayers, two Friday sessions, and educational programs. With its central location, the Musallah allows workers, students, and travelers to connect with their faith without leaving the city. A UMNT spokesperson stated, “This Musallah has grown into the heart of our community. It’s where people come not just to pray, but to learn, reflect, and support one another.”

During the holy month of Ramadan, the Musallah becomes a hub of activity, hosting nightly taraweeh prayers and community iftar meals. These services are particularly vital for international students who may be far from their families. “It’s a place that helps build confidence and belonging,” said Hajrah, a youth mentor involved in the program. “When youth feel supported spiritually and emotionally, they thrive not just in the Muslim community but in wider society.”

The urgency behind the campaign stems from ongoing rental pressures and the uncertainty of commercial leasing. Past relocations have disrupted prayer schedules and community engagement. The UMNT is determined to secure a permanent location, emphasizing that owning a Musallah will expand their programs and provide a stable environment for future generations. “We want stability,” the spokesperson added. “Owning our own Musallah will allow us to expand programs and make sure that our children and future generations always have a place in the heart of Darwin.”

The UMNT’s fundraising efforts have made it easy for individuals to contribute, accepting tax-deductible donations from both local residents and the broader Australian Muslim community. Leaders of the UMNT assert that a permanent facility will enhance public visibility and access for Muslims in the region, known for its cultural diversity and social cohesion.

“This is about creating a positive legacy,” the spokesperson concluded. “We want a space that will continue serving Darwin for generations.”
