Alpine Plans Electric Convertibles to Rival Porsche by 2030

Renault’s performance division, Alpine, is set to introduce two new electric convertibles, the A110 and A310, by 2030. This move comes as the market for traditional drop-top vehicles shrinks, particularly with major manufacturers like Audi and BMW scaling back their convertible offerings. According to a report from UK publication Autocar, these new models aim to establish Alpine as a competitive player in the convertible sports car segment.

The A110 will maintain the model’s reputation for low weight and agile handling, continuing its legacy as a sought-after sports car. In contrast, the upcoming A310 is expected to adopt a more futuristic design, moving away from the retro aesthetic of its predecessor. While the A110 is likely to remain a two-seater, the A310 is anticipated to accommodate up to four passengers. This could position it against established rivals like the Ford Mustang, albeit with a distinct driving experience.

Alpine’s strategy reflects a broader trend in the automotive industry. As more manufacturers pivot away from convertibles, Alpine is betting on the appeal of electric roadsters. The new-generation A110 is poised to take on the Porsche Boxster, which is also on the path to electrification, with a fully electric version currently in development.

Expanding the Alpine Range

The introduction of the A110 and A310 roadsters will enhance Alpine’s portfolio, which already includes the recently launched A290 hot hatch, based on the electric Renault 5, and the A390 coupe SUV, expected to enter the Australian market. Additionally, Alpine is reportedly developing two larger SUVs, signaling a commitment to diversifying its offerings.

This decision to launch new convertibles stands in stark contrast to the actions of other manufacturers. Audi has discontinued all of its convertible models, while BMW is phasing out the Z4, and Mercedes-Benz has streamlined its convertible lineup significantly. Given these market dynamics, the launch of electric convertibles is particularly notable, as such vehicles remain rare. Currently, only two electric convertibles, the MG Cyberster and the Maserati GranCabrio Folgore, are available for sale in Australia.

Alpine’s move to release these two electric convertibles reflects a shift in consumer preferences towards electric and hybrid options. As more automakers embrace electric technology, Alpine is positioning itself to attract enthusiasts looking for a blend of performance and sustainability in their vehicles. As the automotive landscape continues to evolve, the success of the A110 and A310 will depend on how well they resonate with drivers in an increasingly competitive market.
