Italian Tennis Legend Nicola Pietrangeli Dies at 92

BREAKING: Nicola Pietrangeli, the iconic Italian tennis champion, has died at the age of 92. The Italian Tennis and Padel Federation confirmed his passing on Monday, although the cause of death has not been disclosed.

Pietrangeli, a pivotal figure in tennis history, was the first Italian player to capture a Grand Slam title, winning the French Open in 1959. He defended his title successfully in 1960, holding the record for the most Grand Slam singles titles by an Italian until Jannik Sinner surpassed it this year.

His remarkable career includes significant milestones: Pietrangeli was also a two-time runner-up at Roland Garros in 1961 and 1964, and he won the doubles title in Paris alongside Orlando Sirola in 1959. He reached the semifinals at Wimbledon in 1960 and was a quarterfinalist at the Australian Open in 1957.

In Davis Cup history, Pietrangeli stands out with the record for the most total wins and singles wins, boasting a singles record of 78-32 and a doubles record of 42-12. He formed a successful doubles partnership with Sirola, winning 34 of their 42 matches together.

“Nicola Pietrangeli was the true embodiment of everything Davis Cup represents – passion, prestige and pride in representing your nation,”

said David Haggerty, president of the International Tennis Federation.

During his playing career, Pietrangeli led Italy to the Davis Cup final twice, although both times ended in defeat to Australia, featuring legends like Rod Laver. In 1976, he achieved success as a captain when he guided Italy to its first Davis Cup victory, overcoming Chile amidst political tensions.

Current Davis Cup captain Filippo Volandri expressed deep sorrow, stating, “Today our tennis loses a giant. Nicola Pietrangeli was the first idol for anyone who has loved this sport.”

After retiring from competitive play, Pietrangeli became a revered figure in Italian tennis, often referred to as the “godfather” of the sport. He was a familiar face at the Italian Open, a tournament he won in both 1957 and 1961.

Tributes have poured in from the tennis community. Rafael Nadal shared heartfelt condolences on social media, stating, “I just heard the sad news about the passing of an Italian and world tennis great. My sincerest condolences to his family and the entire Italian tennis family. RIP Nicola.”

Pietrangeli’s legacy in tennis is irreplaceable, having inspired generations of players and fans alike. His contributions to the sport will be remembered, and his death marks the end of an era in Italian tennis.

As the world mourns the loss of this tennis legend, fans and fellow athletes alike are encouraged to reflect on his profound impact on the sport and the inspiration he provided to countless players.
