UPDATE: The 2025 Young Farmer Upskill and Invest Scholarship recipients have been announced, showcasing the innovative spirit of modern agriculture. This year’s awardees include Tammy Stone, a seventh-generation dairy farmer from Katunga, and Jacob Scicluna from Riverslea, who aims to turn his beef and cropping farm into a full-time income source. The scholarships are vital for these young agricultural leaders to enhance their skills and drive sustainability in farming practices.
The scholarships are designed to support young farmers like Bonnie Hiscock, a native flower grower from Stratford, who plans to use her funding to gain expertise in sustainable farming, plant health, and resource management. “As a former recipient of the scholarship, I know how important it was to have government support to move ahead in my career and try something a bit different to benefit my farming business,” stated Clay Gowers, chair of the Young Farmers Advisory Council.
This initiative is part of a broader government strategy to empower the next generation of farmers. They offer additional support, including the Young Farmer Duty Exemption, which aids in purchasing farmland. The Young Farmers Advisory Council also provides critical advice on issues affecting young agricultural workers, acting as ambassadors for farming careers.
In addition to scholarships, Young Farmer Business Bootcamps are held regularly across Victoria. These bootcamps equip young farmers with essential skills to manage business risks, develop effective business plans, and build confidence in making sound decisions.
The impact of these scholarships and programs is immediate and profound, offering pathways for young farmers to thrive in an evolving industry. As agriculture faces new challenges, the investment in young talent is not just beneficial—it’s essential for the future of food production and sustainability.
Stay tuned for more updates on how these young innovators will reshape agriculture and what it means for the community.
