Volunteers Unite to Transform Aintree SES Garden for Community

URGENT UPDATE: The front garden of the VICSES Aintree Unit is poised for a transformative overhaul, as volunteers from Bacchus Marsh Grammar collaborate with local residents to create a vibrant community space. This initiative is in the initial planning stages but is already generating excitement among students and community members alike.

In a meeting earlier today with campus head Danielle Copeman, VICSES Aintree confirmed that students will kick off design work in early 2024. The partnership aims to turn the garden on Fields Street into an educational and interactive area, distancing it from its previous identity as a simple entrance.

Early concept ideas are ambitious and imaginative, featuring a neighborhood fairy garden for children, a leave-one, take-one library to foster reading, and dedicated areas for storm safety messages. Alex Setterfield, unit controller for VICSES Aintree, emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating, “Students will be involved in site visits, mapping, concept sketches, choosing planting and even planning interactive features.”

This project represents a unique opportunity for students to engage in a real-world community project, instilling values such as teamwork, planning, and resilience—principles at the core of SES volunteerism. The initiative is set to be fully funded by the community and local businesses, with VICSES volunteers dedicating labor and expertise to the garden’s preparation.

The Aintree unit is currently reaching out for support from local businesses willing to donate materials, plants, tools, or financial contributions. “We often meet people on their worst days,” Mr. Setterfield added. “A welcoming garden helps balance that by giving the community a calm, positive place where they can interact with us in a different way.”

The overall goal is to strengthen long-term connections with young people, schools, and community groups, paving the way for future workshops and education programs. Those interested in contributing to this impactful project are encouraged to contact the unit via email at [email protected].

This initiative not only aims to beautify the local environment but also to foster a sense of community spirit and resilience among residents. As the project unfolds, it promises to become a cornerstone for positive interactions between the SES and the community, reaffirming the importance of collaboration and shared goals.

Stay tuned for more updates as this exciting transformation takes shape!
