Essendon Bombers Revamp Training Approach for Competitive Edge

Essendon Football Club is undergoing a significant transformation in its training regimen, aiming to enhance player fitness and resilience for upcoming seasons. Following years of injury struggles and inconsistent performance, the Bombers are implementing a new approach to ensure players remain competitive throughout the season.

Young defender Archie Roberts, who finished second in the Bombers’ best-and-fairest awards this year, has already observed the effects of this overhaul. The players are now engaging in high-intensity training sessions, which include running for seven-minute intervals without breaks for hydration. This method is designed to simulate the challenging moments in games when players cannot leave the field.

“The new fitness team have come in with a set of structure that’s new to us, and we’re very excited,” Roberts stated after a warm training session on Wednesday. “We’re loving the structure of the trainings; a lot more high speed, a lot more gruelling sessions. We know it’s setting us up for the season in 2026.”

As part of their preparations, the Bombers are concentrating on excelling during the most demanding phases of matches. Roberts emphasized the importance of being the fastest and hardest-working team when the game reaches its peak intensity.

Leadership Changes and Team Dynamics

In addition to the training changes, Essendon is also witnessing a shift in leadership. Zach Merrett, a key player and former captain, has stepped down from his leadership role following a failed trade to Hawthorn. He is widely respected within the club, and his decision has been met with admiration from teammates.

“Zach’s such a respected player and such a loved player of our group,” Roberts commented on Merrett’s contribution. “He handed it down, but he’s still an Essendon person, and we love him. We all love playing with him.”

Looking ahead, former No.1 draft pick Andrew McGrath is anticipated to be named the new captain after players vote on the leadership role during the off-season. This transition represents an opportunity for the team to embrace new leadership while building on the strong foundation established by Merrett.

At just 20 years old, Roberts is already positioning himself as a leader within the club. He aims to support the next captain and contribute to the Bombers’ improvement from a challenging 6-17 season that concluded with them in 15th place on the ladder.

“Leadership is something I think is one of the strengths of mine,” Roberts said. “I’m just going to be here and help guide and support this next captain, whoever it is. There are so many boys that can step up and fill it.”

As Essendon prepares for a new season, the commitment to rigorous training and adaptive leadership is intended to foster a competitive spirit and resilience among players. The Bombers are determined to rise from their recent struggles and make a significant impact in the upcoming 2026 season.
