Opposition Accuses Albanese Government of Rationing Aged Care Funds

UPDATE: The Opposition has launched a fierce attack on the Albanese Government, accusing it of “secretly rationing” aged care funds after alarming revelations emerged regarding interim funding packages. Officials disclosed that a staggering 93 percent of Support at Home packages granted since the start of October 2023 are interim, allowing recipients to access only 60 percent of their necessary funding.

During a Senate estimates hearing on Wednesday, Health Department officials confirmed that individuals receiving these interim packages are left waiting for up to 17 weeks—with an average wait time of 10 weeks—to receive their full funding. This has raised significant concerns about the adequacy of care for vulnerable Australians.

Shadow health minister Anne Ruston condemned this approach, stating it breaks a promise made to Australians and undermines the spirit of a Senate order aimed at accelerating the release of aged care packages. “Older Australians had no idea their promised care could be quietly cut to 60 percent just because the Government has made a budgetary decision,” she said.

In a revealing statement, First Assistant Secretary Greg Pugh explained that the decision to issue interim packages was made in collaboration with the Department of Finance to manage the Budget effectively. He noted that the remaining 83,000 additional packages would be released in a mix of full and interim packages.

The human impact of this situation is significant. At the end of October, approximately 238,000 Australians were still waiting for care, with 113,150 people pending assessments of their aged care needs. While the number of people awaiting assessments has decreased slightly, the median waiting time has now increased to 30 days. Additionally, more than 107,281 individuals have been assessed as needing a Support at Home package, but many remain in a precarious situation, receiving care at a reduced level.

As this situation unfolds, many are left questioning the commitment of the Albanese Government to prioritize aged care. The Opposition’s accusations highlight a growing concern over the treatment of older Australians and the transparency of funding processes.

What’s next? Expect further developments as pressure mounts on the Government to address these serious allegations and clarify its funding strategies. The urgency of this matter continues to resonate with many families relying on adequate aged care services for their loved ones.

This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
