UPDATE: An arson attack on Gosnells Gifts in Maddington has sparked urgent concerns over escalating violence tied to the illicit tobacco trade. The incident occurred around 5:00 AM on Thursday, when two unidentified men set the front of the store ablaze. Authorities were alerted at 8:30 AM, after firefighters successfully extinguished the fire.
Police have confirmed that a white Mitsubishi Lancer ES was involved, with the suspects reportedly fleeing southbound on Albany Highway. A police spokesperson stated, “Further inquiries suggest the premises was linked to illicit tobacco products.” The extent of the damage remains unclear, but the investigation is ongoing.
This alarming event follows a series of similar attacks in Perth, including a fiery ram raid at a beauty salon in Orelia on November 28. In that incident, a white Ford Territory was found engulfed in flames inside the salon around 4:25 AM. Authorities have noted that this salon was previously associated with illicit tobacco and illegal vape products.
Just days earlier, on November 24, a tobacco business in Midland was severely damaged in another arson attack. Detectives from the Serious and Organised Crime Squad suspect that these firebombings are tactics employed by criminal organizations to intimidate businesses that interfere with their lucrative operations.
Detective Senior Sergeant Ryan McGuggon from the drug and firearm squad remarked on the grim trend: “Firebombings are often used by criminals linked to the illicit tobacco trade as a stand-over tactic.” This latest incident highlights a concerning rise in violence in the ongoing battles for control over the illegal tobacco market in Western Australia.
As investigations continue, authorities urge anyone with information to come forward. The community remains on high alert as these violent acts threaten public safety and the integrity of local businesses. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
