Urgent: 19-Year-Old Seth Crane Dies After Suicide Attempt

UPDATE: A tragic incident has unfolded as 19-year-old Seth Crane from Tasmania’s North West Coast has died following a suicide attempt that occurred earlier this month. The news was confirmed by his uncle, Cade Lucas, a journalist for Star Weekly, who shared the devastating impact of this loss.

Just last month, Seth was found unconscious at Burnie Hospital after a suicide attempt. After being stabilized and moved to the ICU, hopes for his recovery were briefly lifted when it was reported that he was breathing independently. However, the situation took a turn as an MRI revealed severe brain damage, and on November 7, 2023, just two weeks after the attempt, he succumbed to his injuries.

Cade Lucas described the moment he received the distressing news while vacationing at Bells Beach, where a message from his sister alerted him to the gravity of the situation. “Seth was alive and in the best of care,” Lucas recalled, grappling with the disbelief that his vibrant nephew could be in such dire straits.

Seth was known for his charisma and talent in the performing arts, having recently taken on a role as a theatre assistant after completing high school in Tasmania. Despite a tumultuous upbringing and challenges with mental health, he seemed to be on a promising path. “He had an abiding passion that he was pursuing,” Lucas noted, expressing the shock felt by family and friends alike at the sudden turn of events.

The family, now faced with unimaginable grief, has been supported by Lifeline, a crucial resource for those in crisis. Lucas emphasizes the importance of mental health awareness and urges those who may be struggling to seek help. “We must talk about these issues openly,” he stated.

As Australia grapples with the staggering rates of youth suicide, this heartbreaking case highlights the urgent need for mental health resources and awareness. Official statistics show that suicide is the leading cause of death among young people aged 15-24 in Australia.

The family plans to honor Seth’s memory and advocate for better mental health support services. Cade Lucas has expressed the significance of sharing their story, aiming to shed light on the challenges faced by many youths today.

For anyone in crisis or needing support, Lifeline is available at 13 11 14 for immediate help.

This devastating loss serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the critical importance of compassion and understanding in times of need.
