BREAKING: Two 11-year-old boys have been charged in connection with a devastating bushfire that ravaged the Geraldton suburb of Spalding in Western Australia on November 28. The inferno destroyed one home and severely damaged property, prompting urgent action from authorities and firefighters.
Police allege the boys ignited the fire, which initially spread into bushland before being extinguished. However, the blaze reignited on Sunday due to perilous weather conditions, with gusts reaching up to 80 km/h starting at 5:20 AM on Monday. The fire posed an immediate threat to lives and hundreds of properties in Geraldton’s northern suburbs, forcing residents to evacuate their homes, closing schools, and leaving thousands without power.
A police spokesman confirmed that four juveniles were identified during the investigation, and the two charged boys have been referred to the Juvenile Justice Team under the charge of Breach of Duty. “Lighting fires is extremely dangerous and can put lives and property at risk,” the spokesperson stated. “Thank you to the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) and local volunteers for their prompt response in safeguarding the Geraldton community.”
The human toll of the fire is heartbreaking. A GoFundMe page has been created for Nic Morgan and Lyn Bartlett, who lost everything in the blaze. Family member Allee Bartlett shared, “Devastatingly, they have lost absolutely everything. They returned from medical appointments in Perth to find their world turned upside down.” Tragically, their beloved pet cat, Smudge, did not survive the fire. “This loss has left them shattered,” Allee added.
In a show of community support, Goodstart Early Learning Wonthella has initiated a fundraiser for staff member Gail and her daughter, who also suffered significant damage to their home. “In a single night, their world changed — they lost precious belongings and their sense of safety,” a spokesperson said. “Every donation — no matter the size — will help them begin the long journey of restoring their lives.”
Authorities are urging anyone who witnessed suspicious behavior or has information about the bushfire to contact Crime Stoppers. A reward of up to $25,000 is available for information leading to the identification and conviction of those responsible for arson.
As the community rallies to support those affected, the psychological and emotional impact of this tragedy continues to unfold. The investigation remains active, and updates will follow as more details emerge. Stay tuned for the latest developments as the situation evolves.
