Bendigo Spirit Secures Dominant 35-Point Victory Over Geelong

UPDATE: The Bendigo Spirit delivered a stunning performance last night, securing their most dominant win in over a decade by crushing the Geelong Venom with a score of 93-58. This decisive victory marks a significant moment for the Spirit as they rebound from offseason player losses, including star Sami Whitcomb.

Playing in a “home away from home” game at Ballarat’s Selkirk Stadium, the Spirit showcased their strength, improving their record to 8-2. The game also highlighted the impressive emergence of Kelsey Rees, who achieved her first career double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Coach Kennedy Kereama has guided the Spirit through a seamless transition, even in the absence of pregnant superstar Marianna Tolo and limited contributions from Casey Samuels, who is recovering from a foot injury. The Spirit’s performance against Geelong not only quashed doubts about their championship potential but also sent a clear message to the league.

Kelsey Griffin led the charge with an outstanding all-around game, scoring 19 points, collecting 11 rebounds, and making five steals. This marks the second time this season Griffin has recorded five or more steals, a testament to her defensive prowess.

The Spirit dominated the boards, out-rebounding Geelong by a significant margin of 50-36, and displayed superior shooting efficiency, hitting 11-of-27 from three-point range compared to Geelong’s 3-of-25. By halftime, Bendigo had already established an 18-point lead, leading 45-27 at the break.

“I’m really proud of our group… we play hard and we play for each other,” Griffin stated after the game. “We know the WNBL is a marathon and championships aren’t won in December, so it’s about wanting to get better.” The Spirit’s performance is a clear indication of their potential as they move forward in the season.

In addition to the game, the WNBL announced earlier this week that it will expand next season with the introduction of the Tasmania Jewels, increasing the league to nine teams. Jennie Sager, WNBL CEO, expressed enthusiasm for the new team, highlighting the opportunity it creates for young girls to pursue basketball at the highest level.

The Spirit’s next challenge will occur on Sunday night as they face the Southside Flyers in Melbourne. Fans will be watching closely to see if the Spirit can maintain their momentum and continue to build on their impressive record.

Stay tuned for more updates as the season unfolds!
