The Sydney Flames’ new head coach, Renae Garlepp, encountered a challenging beginning to her tenure, as the team suffered a decisive 93-60 defeat against the ladder-leading Townsville Fire on March 9, 2024. The loss was compounded by injuries to key players, casting a shadow over the Flames’ performance at the Townsville Entertainment Centre.
Both Issy Morgan and Shaneice Swain exited the game with suspected injuries. Morgan, who had contributed eight points, fell awkwardly while transitioning into position, clutching her right leg during the second quarter. Swain was substituted after just five minutes of play and spent the remainder of the match icing her knee. Garlepp noted that point guard Mikhaela Cann was also dealing with an ankle issue. The Flames entered the match without their top scorer Lauren Nicholson, who was absent due to family commitments, and French import Olivia Epoupa, who was sidelined with a concussion.
Despite these setbacks, Garlepp, who stepped in after the resignation of former coach Guy Molloy, attempted to instill a competitive spirit within the squad. She encouraged the team to focus on ball movement and apply pressure against Townsville’s robust offense. Nevertheless, the Flames struggled throughout the match, recording 23 turnovers and achieving only 32 percent in field goal attempts, which severely hampered their chances of competing effectively.
Agnes Emma-Nnopu stood out as the Flames’ most active player, securing 11 rebounds and scoring six points. Rookie Carla Pittman also made a notable contribution with 10 points and four steals. Garlepp reflected on the team’s efforts, stating, “We kept fighting all game, and to lose the second half by four. I’m incredibly proud of everyone.” She acknowledged the difficulties of the week, emphasizing a focus on player needs and gradual improvement.
On the opposing side, the Townsville Fire continued their impressive run, marking their seventh consecutive victory. Miela Sowah was particularly influential, matching her season-high with 26 points along with three assists. Other key players included Lauren Cox, who recorded eight points and 10 rebounds, and Abbey Ellis, who added 12 points, pushing the Fire’s season record to 9-1.
Townsville’s head coach Shannon Seebohm praised his team’s defensive capabilities, stating, “If we’re going to be a good team in this league, and we’re going to have the ability to play offense the way that we want to, we need to get stops.” He acknowledged the team’s growth from preseason to now, noting their ability to generate quality shots that allowed for a commanding lead.
The Fire began the match with a strong defensive presence, quickly establishing a 16-point lead by the end of the first quarter. The second quarter proved more competitive, but Townsville maintained their edge, heading into halftime with a substantial lead of 54-28. The Flames’ struggles continued in the second half, leading to their second consecutive loss and a season record of 3-8.
As the Flames regroup and assess their injuries, Garlepp’s leadership will be crucial in navigating the challenges ahead. The team will aim to bounce back in their upcoming fixtures, hoping to regain momentum and secure vital wins in the competitive league.
