URGENT UPDATE: A new wine destination has just opened its doors in Launceston, Tasmania, transforming the historic City Park Milk Bar into a vibrant wine room. Owners and local winemakers, Matt and Sarah Hurst from Highclare Estate, are excited to welcome visitors to their latest venture, which promises to be a cornerstone of the community.
Located at the corner of Cameron and Tamar Streets, the newly renovated space invites guests to indulge in tastings, cellar door sales, and wines by the glass. The Hursts are committed to preserving the heritage of the former milk bar, which holds nostalgic value for many locals. “It’s a piece of heritage for Launceston, and we feel a lot of responsibility in taking it on,” Mrs. Hurst stated.
The couple aims to connect with local producers, emphasizing that tourists come to Tasmania to experience authentic local offerings rather than imported goods. “Launceston is a City of Gastronomy, and we want to help be a part of that theme,” Mr. Hurst explained. The venue is designed to cater to everyone from tourists to locals seeking a relaxing evening with good wine.
Inside, visitors will find self-serve grazing boards featuring local delicacies, with plans to add an ice cream freezer in the future. The couple’s vineyard, established in Hillwood seven years ago, has already made waves in the wine community, with their first vintage bottled in 2023. Guests can expect to see new releases, including a reserve pinot noir and a blanc de blancs, available just in time for the holiday season.
The Hursts’ sparkling rosé, first introduced at Festivale, has received acclaim for its celebratory essence. “Every single person is busy, and it’s nice just to stop and have a glass of rosé and actually feel like you’re having a bit of a celebration,” Mrs. Hurst emphasized.
The couple has already seen a diverse crowd at their new venue, attracting tourists and locals alike. “We’ve had quite a few people coming in after 5 PM,” Mr. Hurst noted, explaining how the wine room has become a popular spot for after-work gatherings.
As the couple continues to offer tours of their vineyard, this new location allows them to introduce their wines to a broader audience. With the community’s enthusiastic response, the Hursts are poised to make a lasting impact on Launceston’s vibrant wine culture.
The opening of this wine destination marks a significant development in Tasmania’s gastronomy scene. As the couple prepares for upcoming wine releases and community events, all eyes will be on Launceston to see how this new venture unfolds. Stay tuned for more updates as the Hursts continue to pour their heart and soul into this exciting venture.
