Injuries Strike Washington Commanders in 31-0 Loss to Vikings

The Washington Commanders faced a challenging game against the Minnesota Vikings on November 12, 2023, suffering a heavy 31-0 defeat. The loss was compounded by injuries to key players, including quarterback Jayden Daniels and tight end Zach Ertz, both of whom left the game and did not return.

Daniels exited the game with 8 minutes and 24 seconds remaining in the third quarter after an interception. While attempting to chase down linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel, he landed awkwardly on his left elbow after being blocked by cornerback Isaiah Rodgers. He remained on the ground for a moment before making his way to the sideline, where medical staff attended to him. Although Daniels was initially listed as questionable to return, he stayed on the bench as Marcus Mariota took over as quarterback for the remainder of the game.

Ertz’s injury occurred just minutes later, with 2:10 left in the third quarter. He sustained a leg injury when he reached for a pass and was hit by safety Jay Ward. Unable to put weight on his right leg, Ertz was assisted off the field and subsequently carted to the locker room, where he was ruled out early in the fourth quarter due to a knee injury.

This season, Ertz has been a significant contributor for the Commanders, recording 49 receptions for 493 yards and four touchdowns. Daniels, having just returned from a dislocated elbow that sidelined him for three games, has had a tumultuous season, finishing only four of his seven starts. He has struggled with injuries throughout, including a sprained knee and a hamstring issue that each cost him games earlier in the season.

Daniels completed 9-of-20 passes for 78 yards and one interception before his exit against the Vikings. The Commanders were optimistic about his return, hoping he could participate in the final five games of the season. Unfortunately, the injuries sustained during this game have raised concerns about the team’s resilience and depth as they look to finish the season strong.
