Neo-Nazi Daniel Stocks Fined for Public Nazi Salutes in Perth

UPDATE: A Perth man, Daniel Alexander Stocks, has been fined $1,800 for making multiple Nazi salutes at a local pub, claiming pride in his neo-Nazi beliefs. This incident occurred on August 31 during an anti-immigration rally, sparking outrage and legal consequences.

Stocks, aged 36, attended the March for Australia event with members of the National Socialist Network. Witnesses reported him performing five Nazi salutes at Fenians Irish Pub on Adelaide Terrace while making racist remarks, fully aware he was being recorded. This blatant display of hate led to his court appearance on October 3, where he initially expressed remorse.

However, during a recent court session, Stocks contradicted his earlier claims. Outside the court, he stated, “I’m proud to be a neo-Nazi,” and dismissed the mainstream narrative of World War II, asserting, “I don’t believe Hitler was a bad guy.” His comments have drawn widespread condemnation and underscore the troubling resurgence of extremist ideologies.

Magistrate Brionie Ayling highlighted the serious nature of Stocks’ actions, stating, “This is not a low-end example of its type.” She emphasized that making Nazi gestures in public became illegal last year due to community condemnation. Stocks’ defense lawyer, Roisin Keating, argued that his intoxication and “ignorance” contributed to his behavior, but the court did not accept these justifications.

While Stocks pleaded guilty, the magistrate noted that his behavior was offensive and unacceptable. The maximum penalty for similar offenses could reach five years in prison, but Stocks received a lesser penalty due to his early admission of guilt.

Following the ruling, Stocks continued to express his controversial views, claiming, “People are entitled to their own opinion, just like I am.” His defiance and the nature of his remarks raise concerns about the influence and visibility of extremist groups in Australia.

As this case highlights ongoing issues of racism and hate speech, communities are urged to remain vigilant against such ideologies. The legal ramifications of Stocks’ actions serve as a reminder of the serious consequences associated with public displays of hate.
