Gunmen have attacked and killed three members of the Revolutionary Guard in Iran’s southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchistan. The incident occurred near the city of Lar, approximately 1,125 kilometers southeast of the capital, Tehran, as the Guard members were conducting patrols in a mountainous area near the border with Pakistan.
According to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), the ambush took place without any reported injuries among the Guard members. Following the attack, the Revolutionary Guard described the assailants as “terrorists” and launched a pursuit to apprehend them. As of now, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, leaving the motives and affiliations of the attackers unclear.
Context of Violence in Sistan and Baluchistan
Sistan and Baluchistan is known for its challenging security landscape, often marked by clashes involving various militant groups, armed drug traffickers, and Iranian security forces. The province, which borders both Afghanistan and Pakistan, is one of the least developed regions in Iran, contributing to persistent instability.
In a related incident earlier this year, Iranian security forces killed 13 militants in three separate operations in the province. This occurred shortly after a group of militants attacked police officers, resulting in the deaths of five officers who were on patrol. Such events underline the ongoing violence and the complex challenges faced by security forces in the region.
The Revolutionary Guard’s efforts to combat militancy in Sistan and Baluchistan reflect the broader struggle against organized crime and extremist groups that threaten public safety and stability in Iran. The recent ambush serves as a stark reminder of the volatile situation and the risks faced by security personnel in their duties. As the Revolutionary Guard continues its operations, further developments in this case are anticipated.
