URGENT UPDATE: Authorities in Melbourne are actively pursuing vandals who defaced a police memorial with hate-filled slogans overnight. The incident, which occurred at the memorial honoring fallen officers, involved graffiti that read “good cop = dead cop,” “death to Australia,” and “ACAB (all cops are bastards).”
Victoria Police acting Commander Belinda Jones confirmed that the attack is being treated as a “prejudice-motivated” crime. “To think that someone would do this at a time when we’ve recently lost two of our own is disgusting and beyond belief,” Jones stated in a press briefing. The vandalism was discovered early Friday morning, and authorities seized a can of red spray paint at the scene.
In a swift response, council workers removed the offensive graffiti within just two hours, demonstrating the community’s commitment to upholding respect for law enforcement. However, this is not the first act of vandalism against the memorial; a similar incident occurred on December 13 last year, when the same derogatory phrases were used.
Premier Jacinta Allan condemned the act as “disgusting,” emphasizing that such incidents are becoming alarmingly frequent. “It’s an incredible slur on the good work of the men and women of Victoria Police, especially during a time when our police family and community are grieving the murder of two police officers in the line of duty just a few short months ago,” Allan remarked on ABC Radio.
Police Association secretary Wayne Gatt added that such attacks will not overshadow the contributions of the fallen officers. “This demonstrates why you exist. It shows how important your work is,” Gatt emphasized. “These are the sentiments of a few insignificant people whose lives are punctuated by insignificant acts like this.”
As the investigation continues, police officials are considering implementing surveillance measures to prevent future vandalism, particularly on significant dates. The community’s response to this incident highlights the strong support for law enforcement amidst ongoing challenges.
Residents and supporters are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities around the memorial. The emotional impact of this incident resonates deeply with the community, serving as a stark reminder of the sacrifices made by police officers every day.
