During a pre-game event on March 7, 2024, prior to the Illawarra Hawks’ victory over the Brisbane Bullets, alumni and guests gathered to learn about the impactful work of the Yerbury Lab at the University of Wollongong (UOW). This initiative aims to raise awareness and funds for ongoing research aimed at combating neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Motor Neuron Disease (MND).
The event saw significant participation from former Hawks players and their families, coinciding with the Hawks’ alumni round. UOW Vice Chancellor Max Lu expressed his pride in the groundbreaking research being conducted at the university, which honors the legacy of Professor Justin Yerbury, a former Hawks player whose contributions to science are internationally recognized.
Editor Kathy Sharpe emphasized the dual purpose of the campaign: while financial support is vital for the Yerbury Lab through the MND Research Fund, raising awareness is equally important. “Many people don’t realize that the research taking place right here in Wollongong, carrying on the momentum started by Professor Yerbury, has the potential to change people’s lives,” Sharpe stated. This commitment to both fundraising and education underscores the collaborative spirit of the Hawks community.
The Yerbury Lab is at the forefront of research in neurodegenerative diseases, aiming to develop therapies that could significantly improve patient outcomes. As the appeal coincides with the alumni round, it serves as a poignant reminder of the connection between sports and impactful scientific research, particularly given Professor Yerbury’s history with the team.
Supporters are encouraged to contribute to the cause, as every donation plays a crucial role in advancing the lab’s research efforts. The Illawarra Hawks community is rallying around this initiative, demonstrating how sports can intersect with vital health research to create meaningful change.
As the campaign progresses, fans and community members can stay informed about how to contribute and support the Yerbury Lab, ensuring that the legacy of Professor Justin Yerbury continues through innovative research that aims to transform lives.
