Zoran Milanović, the President of Croatia, presented the prestigious Charter of the Republic of Croatia to the WA Croatian Chamber of Commerce (WACCC) in a ceremony held at the President’s Office in Zagreb on March 15, 2024. This recognition celebrates the Chamber’s two decades of dedicated service in promoting trade and economic cooperation between Croatia and Australia.
Importance of the Croatian Diaspora
During the ceremony, President Milanović emphasized the significant contributions of the Croatian diaspora in Australia. He remarked on how many Croats have established thriving lives and businesses despite the geographical distance from their homeland. “In Australia, although it is a faraway country on the other side of the world, many Croats have found and continue to find their home, where they raise families and conduct business,” Milanović stated. He highlighted the resilience and determination of the Croatian community in connecting the economies of both nations.
Addressing the challenges of fostering economic ties with a competitive market like Australia, Milanović noted, “This is difficult work and a long journey, and I sincerely thank you for these efforts.” He encouraged the Chamber to persist in its mission and to serve as a model for Croatian communities globally.
Promoting Investment and Cultural Events
The WACCC has been instrumental in promoting Croatia as a safe and attractive destination for investment over the past twenty years. The organization has facilitated numerous business delegations, connecting Croatian and Australian entrepreneurs. Recently, the Chamber organized the Croatian Film Festival in Perth, which is one of many cultural events designed to foster community engagement and celebrate Croatian heritage.
In accepting the Charter, Luke Jurčević, the President of the WACCC, expressed gratitude on behalf of the Chamber and its members. “This recognition is a great honour for our Chamber and for the entire Croatian community in Western Australia,” he stated. Jurčević continued, “It is a confirmation that two decades of voluntary work, dedication, and belief in the strength of Croatian–Australian economic cooperation have been worthwhile.”
He reiterated the Chamber’s commitment to strengthening ties between Croatia and Australia, promoting the nation as a reliable partner for trade and investment.
The WACCC also plays a vital role in the cultural life of the Croatian community in Australia. Members participate in annual celebrations such as Croatian Statehood Day and organize events like the Croatian Wine Festival. These initiatives promote the contributions of Croatian women to the Western Australian economy and support various efforts to enhance Croatia’s profile in the region.
The ceremony was attended by notable figures, including Richard Rodgers, the Australian Ambassador to Croatia, David Tudorović, the Honorary Croatian Consul to South Australia, Zoran Šangut, the Croatian Consul in Perth, and Logan Howlett, the Mayor of Cockburn. Their presence underscored the significance of this recognition and the ongoing collaboration between Croatia and Australia.
The WACCC continues to be a vital link between the two countries, working tirelessly to ensure that the Croatian community in Australia thrives and that the economic ties between the nations remain strong.
