Byron Bay Boardriders Shine at Cooee Grommet Pro 2025

URGENT UPDATE: The Byron Bay Boardriders have achieved remarkable success at the 2025 Cooee Grommet Pro, held from December 13 to 15 at Coolum Beach, Sunshine Coast. A passionate group of junior surfers made the trip north, and they returned home with extraordinary accolades that highlight their talent and dedication.

The Cooee Grommet Pro stands as one of Australia’s premier junior surfing competitions, drawing the nation’s top young surfers across various age divisions. This year, competitors faced challenging yet thrilling conditions with powerful, high-quality waves, setting the stage for an unforgettable demonstration of skill and courage among the next generation of surfing talent.

Among the standout performances was 7-year-old Lakey Rae Bell, who displayed exceptional bravery and skill in waves that reached triple overhead. Lakey surged through the competition, securing a stunning first place in the U8 mixed division while also finishing fourth in the U10 girls category. Her achievements have captured the attention of the surfing community.

Another highlight was 8-year-old Coco Spierings, who nearly clinched victory in her first major surf competition. Coco led the U10 girls final until the final seconds, only to be narrowly edged out by a last-minute wave. Her impressive second-place finish marks her as a rising star in the sport.

The success story continued with Jaya Suhendra, who earned a commendable second place in the U12 boys division, while Rosie Barron and Tymen Spierings secured fourth places in the U12 girls and U14 boys divisions, respectively.
