UPDATE: In a groundbreaking move, a south-west Australian business, Warrnambool Manufacturing Industries (WMI), has just shipped eight bale feeders to Chile, marking a significant step for the company and the local agricultural industry. These machines, produced in Warrnambool’s industrial district, are set to enhance the South American market as they join the existing seven machines already in operation there.
Owner Jason Willie described this achievement as a monumental accomplishment for a product that traditionally remains within Australia. “It’s probably a product that doesn’t really go outside of Australia normally,” he stated, highlighting the uniqueness of this export. “If it’s putting Warrnambool on the map, it gets farmers’ interest because they think, ‘I’m using the same product and they’re sending them overseas.'”
The shipment was no small feat. Willie detailed the innovative process involved in getting the feeders ready for transport. “We’d never put [this many machines] in a container before,” he explained. “I drew out the container dimensions, and once we built the machines, we laid them all upright to make it work.” The unique design allows the feeders to produce two round bales, showcasing the ingenuity of local manufacturing.
Mr. Willie, who took over the business in 2009 after starting his career as an apprentice there, noted that WMI has become a vital part of the south-west agricultural scene, with estimates of 600 to 800 machines operating in the region. He shared that the shipment to Chile will take approximately three months to arrive.
In addition to this milestone, WMI is gearing up for its participation in the upcoming Koroit Field Days and Agricultural Show, scheduled for February 20-21, 2026. This event promises to be an excellent opportunity for farmers to learn about the latest technologies and innovations in agriculture. The field days committee recently announced a partnership with The Midfield Group and Union Dairy Company, enhancing the event’s offerings.
Committee secretary Julie Houlihan emphasized the significance of this partnership, stating, “Their support strengthens our ability to provide farmers with direct access to the latest technology, market insights, and hands-on demonstrations.” With expanded displays and expert presentations, the event aims to foster best practices in farming, sustainability, and profitability.
