Henry Pollock Aims for British and Irish Lions Glory in Australia

Henry Pollock has experienced an extraordinary rise in rugby union over the past year, positioning himself as a potential standout for the British and Irish Lions. As the team prepares for its series against Australia, Pollock’s contributions have been pivotal, particularly highlighted during England’s victory over France in the World Rugby U20 Championship final on July 19, 2024, in Cape Town. The 20-year-old loose forward is now on the cusp of earning his place in head coach Andy Farrell‘s Test lineup for the opening match in Brisbane.

In the U20 Championship final, Pollock demonstrated his capabilities, and since then, he has not shied away from challenges, whether for his club or country. Reflecting on his rapid ascent, he shared, “It’s all come so fast and I’m just trying to enjoy the ride and enjoy every moment,” in an interview with Sky Sports‘ Dan Biggar prior to his impressive performance against the AUNZ Invitational XV in Adelaide, where he scored a try.

Pollock, the youngest player on tour, has embraced the camaraderie of the Lions, forming connections with his teammates and taking on the delightful responsibility of caring for the team mascot, BIL. “He’s still by my side luckily, so I haven’t lost him yet,” he joked, adding a touch of humor to the experience. His lighthearted demeanor resonates with the team, although he is keen to be recognized for more than just his mascot duties.

His performances since the U20 triumph have been remarkable, including two tries during his senior debut for England against Wales in a commanding Six Nations victory. Pollock’s dynamic displays have also contributed to Northampton Saints’ journey to the Champions Cup final last season, showcasing his talent and flair as a player.

Pollock’s aspirations are clear as he competes for a spot in the first Test. “I want to play,” he stated, acknowledging the fierce competition within the back row. “Everyone wants to play and it’s a competitive group, especially in the back row. We’ve got a very strong group there.” He highlighted the unique environment in which players are united in their goals, emphasizing the importance of learning from each other.

Coaching insights from Mark Mapletoft, who has guided Pollock through his journey, reveal the expectations placed on the young player. Mapletoft noted that while Pollock’s rapid rise may have surprised some, he has always been a high achiever. Pollock has been a part of the England pathways programme since he captained the U18s tour to South Africa at just 17 years old.

“Henry has a lot of highlight moments,” Mapletoft remarked, praising his aggressive and fearless playing style. “He’s extremely aggressive, powerful, quick with his carry, he’s fearless, he’s got lots of energy around the group.” These attributes were decisive in Farrell’s decision to include Pollock in the original 38-man squad for the Australian tour.

As Pollock prepares to compete with notable players like Josh van der Flier and Tom Curry for a Test spot, he is focused on consistency in his performance. Mapletoft emphasized the importance of the “bread and butter bits” for a back-rower, such as tackle counts and accuracy. “If he can do that, then the sky’s the limit for the lad,” he added.

Pollock’s confidence is palpable as he looks ahead to the upcoming series, expressing his belief that the Lions can achieve a 3-0 victory against the Wallabies. With his unwavering determination and notable talent, many are optimistic about his potential to deliver a Test-winning performance in the prestigious Lions jersey.

The British and Irish Lions tour of Australia will be exclusively broadcast on Sky Sports, featuring all three Tests against the Wallabies along with six warm-up matches, promising an exhilarating showcase of rugby excellence.
