Nearly 500 members of the Croatian community gathered at Dinamo St Albans for an unforgettable PodroomTV Christmas special on December 16, 2023. The event featured live music, emotional performances, surprise guests, and a strong sense of community spirit, transforming the venue into a vibrant celebration of culture and camaraderie.
The evening commenced at 18:30, attracting families and early arrivals. This thoughtful timing allowed the atmosphere to build steadily, creating a warm and inviting environment. A replica of the familiar PodroomTV set was staged, enhancing the sense of connection among attendees. Bar staff and kitchen crews remained busy, as a steady influx of guests kept the energy high from the outset.
Hosts Anthony Smolić and Rob Špoljar excelled in their roles, engaging effortlessly with the audience and fostering an atmosphere of laughter and applause. Their chemistry, well-known to viewers, translated seamlessly to the live event, where their banter and spontaneity created a lively ambiance. As the evening progressed, the crowd expanded, turning a cozy gathering into a full-fledged celebration.
The musical guest, Major Minor, opened the event with an unplugged set that encouraged conversation and connection among attendees. This softer approach set the stage for a memorable night. The mood shifted dramatically with the arrival of special guest Matko Jelavić from Croatia. His presence was met with palpable excitement, instantly lifting the atmosphere.
One of the night’s highlights occurred during a moving singalong of “Majko stara,” with Major Minor performing alongside Jelavić. The audience sang passionately, bridging generations and creating a shared cultural experience that resonated deeply with many. Jelavić, visibly moved by the response, connected with the crowd on a profound level.
The emotional high point of the evening came when Smolić performed his original song “Ne daj se.” Written as a tribute to Croatians living abroad, the song honored those who carry their heritage in their hearts, regardless of their distance from home. Attendees described the performance as a “goosebump moment,” encapsulating the essence of the night.
This PodroomTV Christmas special transcended the concept of a typical event. It served as a final opportunity for friends and families to connect before the holiday season dispersed them for various commitments. The gathering felt deeply personal, fostering a sense of unity that many hope will continue to flourish in future gatherings.
Raffle prizes donated by Croatian clubs and organizations added another layer of engagement to the evening. The most sought-after prize, a premium pršut donated by Cimera Butchers, generated significant interest and ultimately sold for an impressive $2,400 at auction. Organized by Jim Tabakis from Strathmore, the proceeds from the raffle and auction covered production costs while ensuring that any excess funds would support future PodroomTV initiatives and community sponsorships.
As the dance floor filled and Major Minor increased the tempo, a surprise guest stunned attendees. Marko Perković Thompson appeared live via video link from Split, joined by Mate Čolina of the Richmond Football Club. The crowd erupted in joy as Thompson extended warm Christmas wishes, creating a memorable moment that many will cherish.
The celebration concluded with Major Minor performing crowd favorites, including “Sine moj,” “Ravnoteža,” and “Lijepa li si,” maintaining the excitement until around midnight. Co-host Rob Špoljar summed up the evening’s emotions, stating, “I’m still processing it all. My heart explodes when our narod comes together and celebrates everything great about our community.”
