Melbourne City Draws with Macarthur After Behich’s Stunning Free Kick

A remarkable free kick by Aziz Behich was not enough to secure a victory for Melbourne City, as they settled for a 1-1 draw against Macarthur FC at AAMI Park on March 15, 2024. The match marked an opportunity for City to bounce back from their recent derby defeat to Melbourne Victory, but they were unable to maintain their early advantage.

The hosts started strongly, taking the lead in the 25th minute when Behich executed a stunning left-footed free kick that sailed over the Macarthur wall and found the back of the net, thrilling the crowd of 4,304. This goal came at a challenging time for Macarthur, who had already made five changes to their lineup following their match against Brisbane Roar just days earlier. The situation worsened when striker Dong-Won Ji appeared to sustain a left ankle injury shortly after the goal.

Despite these setbacks, Macarthur steadied themselves and managed to equalise ten minutes before halftime. After a miscommunication during a clearance attempt, City’s defensive play allowed Harry Politidis to assist Rafael Duran, who finished the move effectively to level the score.

The second half began with Macarthur looking to seize momentum. Substitute Harrison Sawyer had two significant opportunities, heading wide in the 53rd minute and forcing a strong save from City’s goalkeeper Patrick Beach shortly thereafter. As the match progressed, Melbourne City regrouped and created several scoring chances through players like Nathaniel Atkinson, Andreas Kuen, and Andrew Nabbout. Despite their efforts, they could not find a way past Macarthur’s goalkeeper, Filip Kurto.

In a dramatic late attempt, Nabbout believed he had secured the win when he pounced on a rebound from a Behich shot, but his effort was ruled offside by the assistant referee. The draw allowed Melbourne City to rise to fourth place in the A-League Men standings, while Macarthur climbed to seventh.

The match illustrated the resilience of both teams, with Melbourne City showcasing their attacking capabilities and Macarthur demonstrating their ability to recover under pressure. With both sides aiming for higher placements in the league, the draw reflects the competitive nature of the A-League Men this season.
