Melbourne Family Spreads Christmas Joy with Care Packs

On Christmas Day, Derek Glennie and his eight-year-old son, Jackson, are set to continue a heartwarming tradition in Melbourne, Australia. For over 20 years, Glennie has dedicated his holiday to spreading kindness and joy to those facing hardships, transforming his initial solo efforts into a family endeavor.

Glennie began this initiative in his early twenties after his parents relocated to Queensland. With free time on Christmas morning before meeting friends, he started wandering through Melbourne’s Central Business District, offering beers and conversations to those in need. However, he soon recognized that providing alcohol was “counterproductive” and shifted to distributing care packs filled with essential items.

Creating a Christmas Tradition

Now, the distribution of care packs has become an integral part of Glennie’s Christmas ritual. Before enjoying lunch with his family, he loads his car with items such as toiletries, socks, pillows, yoga mats, and phone chargers. He estimates that this year alone, he has given away about $1,000 worth of goods, primarily funded by himself, though friends occasionally contribute funds to help increase their outreach.

Glennie, a secondary school teacher, emphasizes that the bonds he forms with recipients are equally important as the material support he provides. “The other part is connecting with people and talking to them on a day when they could probably do with a bit of cheer,” he explains. Recently, Jackson joined his father on this mission, learning valuable lessons about kindness and empathy.

The conversations they share with individuals experiencing poverty are particularly poignant. One recipient imparted “pearls of wisdom” to Jackson, urging him to always listen to his father. “It brings a tear to my eye every year,” Glennie reflects, acknowledging the emotional impact of their interactions. “I want my kids to grow up to be someone who looks beyond the exterior of people they walk past on the street.”

Understanding Homelessness in Melbourne

Current data tracking homelessness in Melbourne is sobering. The “By-Name List,” which records individuals sleeping rough in the city, revealed that as of October, there were 180 people experiencing various forms of homelessness. This statistic highlights the ongoing challenges faced by many in the community, reinforcing the importance of Glennie’s efforts.

Glennie’s five-year-old daughter is eager to join her father and brother next year, indicating that this family tradition will continue to grow. The preparation for their Christmas outing spans several months, providing opportunities to discuss the significance of compassion and kindness. “It doesn’t matter what you do for a job. They should be the true measures of success,” Glennie asserts, making it clear that emotional success is a priority in his family’s values.

After their morning of giving, Jackson must wait to open his own presents. Yet, Glennie believes that the experience of helping others enriches the joy of receiving gifts. “When you start out with some sobering moments, it makes everything a bit more joyous after that,” he concludes.

This Christmas, as they hit the streets with their care packs, the Glennie family exemplifies the spirit of giving and community, reminding us all of the importance of kindness, especially during the holiday season.
