129 Yachts Set for 80th Sydney to Hobart Race on Boxing Day

UPDATE: The highly anticipated 80th Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race is set to kick off from Sydney Harbour on December 26, 2025, with a record-breaking 129 yachts entering this year’s challenging competition. This surge in participation, which includes six 100-footers—the most since 2014—demonstrates sailors’ resilience despite last year’s tragic events that claimed the lives of two sailors.

The race will commence at 1 PM AEDT, with vessels embarking on a grueling 1,163 kilometers (or 628 nautical miles) journey to Hobart. The current record for the fastest completion, set by Comanche in 2017, stands at just 1 day, 9 hours, 15 minutes, and 24 seconds.

This year’s race has heightened safety protocols following an investigation into last year’s incidents. Notable safety enhancements include mandatory man overboard detection systems for every crew member and a new requirement for at least 50% of the crew to complete their vessel’s qualifying race. Sam Haynes, the commodore of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA), emphasized the importance of these changes for ensuring participant safety.

Last year’s line honours victor, LawConnect, led by skipper Christian Beck, is vying for a third consecutive win. Despite the pressure, Beck acknowledges the unpredictable nature of ocean racing, stating, “Last year obviously Comanche ripped their main sail in half… those mistakes happen, but they are quite rare.” Meanwhile, Ian Thorpe, five-time Olympic gold medallist, has joined the crew this year, raising excitement among fans.

As defending overall champion, Haynes aboard Celestial V70 aims to reclaim the prestigious Tattersall Cup. He expressed his determination: “If I can hold that trophy above my head… I’ll be grabbing it for sure.”

For those eager to catch the action, the race will be broadcast live on Channel 9, with various viewing spots available along the harbour. Key locations include Georges Head Lookout and Nielsen Park, providing excellent vantage points for spectators. Beachgoers at eastern suburbs beaches south of the heads will also enjoy views of the magnificent fleet.

As excitement builds for this iconic maritime event, spectators and participants alike are gearing up for what promises to be a thrilling race. Stay tuned for updates as the countdown to Boxing Day continues!
