Call for Organisers of International Gynecological Awareness Day 2026

International Gynecological Awareness Day (IGAD), observed annually on September 10, is seeking organizers for its 2026 activities. Founded by health advocate Kath Mazzella from Western Australia, this day aims to address the significant neglect of gynaecological and vulva health in education, healthcare systems, and public discourse.

Mazzella emphasizes that conditions such as vulva cancer, lichen sclerosus, endometriosis, and pelvic pain disorders affect millions of women yet remain largely under-discussed and under-funded. “We would never accept this level of silence for breast cancer — yet gynaecological health continues to be treated as uncomfortable, niche, or optional,” she stated while announcing the call for collaboration in organizing the 2026 event. She added, “Women are still suffering in silence because society and systems struggle to even say the word vulva.”

The initiative aims to create a unified platform for governments, health professionals, community organizations, and the media to foster open conversations about gynaecological health. Mazzella believes that this dialogue is essential for improving early recognition and diagnosis, reducing stigma, and supporting women, particularly in rural, remote, and marginalized communities.

Mobilizing for Change in 2026

The upcoming campaign for 2026 will advocate for health departments to prioritize women’s gynaecological health in policy and funding. It will also call on educational institutions to enhance training for professionals regarding these issues and encourage media outlets to play a role in breaking the silence surrounding gynaecological health.

Mazzella highlighted the urgency of the matter, stating that even during the festive season, the need for awareness remains critical. “If we want real change in 2026, the conversations must start now,” she urged. “Gynaecological health is not a ‘special interest’ issue — it is a public health issue.”

Community and corporate partners are encouraged to support awareness initiatives, with Mazzella inviting individuals interested in contributing to reach out through her website.

The emphasis on gynaecological health is a crucial step toward ensuring that women’s health issues receive the attention and resources they deserve. As the date approaches, Mazzella’s call for action highlights the need for collective effort in tackling these vital health concerns.
