Police Arrest 12-Year-Old After Bracken Ridge Explosion

A small explosion in Bracken Ridge on December 28, 2023, led to the arrest of a 12-year-old boy, according to local police. The incident occurred around 13:30 local time when authorities received reports of a loud explosion originating from the public toilets at a shopping centre on Barrett Street. The blast activated the fire sprinkler system, although it resulted in only minor damage and no injuries were reported.

Upon arriving at the scene, police discovered a small, improvised device that had been detonated. The quick response from emergency services ensured that the situation was contained and assessed without further incident.

Later that afternoon, at approximately 17:00, police located the suspect at a residence in Bracken Ridge. The juvenile was taken into custody and is facing multiple charges. These include one count of entering premises with intent, one count of damaging premises by explosion, and one count of stealing related to the materials used to create the explosive device.

The boy is set to appear in the Brisbane Children’s Court on January 9, 2026. Authorities confirmed that the explosion was not linked to any terrorist activity, and there is no ongoing risk to the public.
