URGENT UPDATE: The Parkes sporting community is in mourning as it remembers rugby league legend Lauri Wakefield, who passed away on December 22, 2025, at the age of 77. Known affectionately as “Darby,” Wakefield was a cherished figure, celebrated for his remarkable contributions to both rugby league and hockey.

The NSW Rugby League expressed deep sadness over his passing, labeling him a “true blue” member of the sports community. His home club, the Parkes Spacemen, shared a heartfelt tribute on social media, honoring his legacy and contributions. “Laurie was a local legend who played for NSW firsts, NSW Country firsts, Parramatta Eels, and Parkes Spacemen,” the club stated.

He made his mark early, starting in the opening match of the 1970 State of Origin series against Queensland, where NSW narrowly lost 16-15. He later played a pivotal role in the second match, coming off the bench to help secure a 22-8 victory.

The NSW Rugby League director, Bob Walsh, praised Wakefield’s toughness and heart, stating, “He was only a short, nuggety type of player but was big on heart. He was a good bloke who returned to help out at Parkes once he finished playing.” Walsh conveyed the organization’s condolences to Wakefield’s wife, Dawn, and their family.

Wakefield’s impact extended beyond rugby; he also represented at hockey, further showcasing his athletic versatility. The Parkes Spacemen expressed gratitude for the opportunity to see him during their Old Boys day in August, emphasizing his commitment as a “true clubman to the end.”

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at Wakefield’s funeral service on December 30, 2025, at 10am at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Parkes. The service will be followed by interment at the Parkes Cemetery.

As the community comes together to celebrate the life of Laurie Wakefield, his legacy as a sporting icon and a beloved figure will undoubtedly live on in the hearts of those who knew him. The outpouring of tributes reflects the profound impact he had on many lives in Parkes and beyond.
