Apulia Wins Perth Cup, Eyes Melbourne Cup After Stellar Performance

** FEE APPLIES PER USAGE ** Apulia wins the 2026 Perth Cup for jockey William Pike

UPDATE: In a stunning display of speed and skill, Apulia clinched the Perth Cup earlier today, solidifying his status as a top contender for the upcoming Melbourne Cup. Jockey William Pike guided the strong favorite through a thrilling race, showcasing impeccable teamwork that left fans buzzing with excitement.

The $1 million race, held at Ascot, saw Apulia, the $1.80 favorite, overcome initial doubts about his barrier manners. Pike executed a flawless start, positioning Apulia just behind the leaders before making a bold move at the crucial 600m mark. With fierce competition from Filthy Habits and Playhouse Patron, Apulia surged ahead in the final stretch, crossing the finish line with authority and boosting his career earnings to $1.9 million.

“This win went exactly as planned. Perfect ride by Pikey—he’s in red-hot form,” said JD Hayes, co-trainer of Apulia. The victory not only marks a significant achievement for the horse but also a moment of triumph for owners Jeff and Rhonda Garrett, who have nurtured Apulia’s career from the beginning.

Apulia’s journey has been fraught with challenges, including a serious injury that sidelined him for nearly a year. “He’s been through a lot, and his comeback is a true testament to his character,” Hayes added. The owners have now set their sights on the Melbourne Cup, viewing this victory as a potential turning point for Apulia’s career.

Pike, who has now equaled the legendary Frank Treen‘s record with his fifth Perth Cup win, reflected on the race’s pivotal moments. “I was worried about the jump, but he surprised me with how cleanly he started. It made everything so much easier,” Pike stated. His confidence grew as the race unfolded, and he was thrilled with Apulia’s performance and stamina, critical for success in cup events.

As the racing community buzzes with excitement over Apulia’s future, fans and experts alike are keenly anticipating what lies ahead this autumn in Melbourne. “This trip to Perth will be the making of him,” Hayes remarked, hinting at a promising campaign for Apulia in the upcoming months.

Stay tuned for further updates on Apulia’s journey and preparations for the Melbourne Cup, as this remarkable horse continues to capture the hearts of racing enthusiasts worldwide.
