Western Australia’s Treasurer Rita Saffioti Champions GST Reform

Rita Saffioti, the Treasurer of Western Australia, is taking a leading role in the ongoing debate over the Goods and Services Tax (GST) allocation. With a background shaped by her Italian migrant parents and formative years spent in the Perth Hills, Saffioti’s personal history informs her passionate approach to this critical economic issue.

The GST debate has intensified since the federal Coalition government established a deal in 2018 to ensure that Western Australia’s share would not drop below 75 cents for every dollar contributed. This measure came after the state’s share plummeted to as low as 30 cents in 2015 due to declining iron ore prices. As iron ore values have rebounded, eastern state treasurers argue that the current allocation is inequitable and needs an overhaul.

As the chief critic of eastern states, Saffioti embraces her role in this dispute. She acknowledges the pressures that accompany her position, especially with a 2026 report from the Productivity Commission poised to further galvanize discussions around the GST distribution. “If something is so grossly unfair, something breaks,” she stated, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the fairness of the GST system that her predecessors fought to secure.

Saffioti’s early experiences managing finances began in her father’s truck, where she learned to assess the value of fruits from their family orchard. This upbringing instilled a strong work ethic and resilience in her. “I’m always hard on myself; it was something that was just drummed into me,” she said, reflecting on the demanding expectations set by her parents.

As a significant player in the Labor government, Saffioti has contributed to the party’s success in three consecutive elections. While she is seen as a potential successor to Premier Roger Cook, she remains focused on her current responsibilities. In her words, “I don’t ever think about it,” showcasing her commitment to her role rather than future ambitions.

Sport plays a vital role in Saffioti’s life, providing her with a break from the rigors of government. She coaches her twin daughters’ soccer team and enjoys attending games of the Fremantle Dockers and Perth Glory. “What I love about sport is looking at the tactics and the movements of players,” she explained, indicating how this interest parallels her political strategy.

Saffioti’s connection to Western Australia runs deep, shaped by a childhood spent immersed in local sports and community. Her time in Canberra as a Treasury staffer highlighted the disconnect between the capital and the realities of her home state. “Canberra is very removed from the coalface of WA,” she noted, which has fostered a strong sense of identity and pride in her state.

As the GST debate looms on the national stage, Saffioti’s determination to advocate for Western Australia remains unwavering. Her unique background, commitment to fairness, and passion for her state position her as a formidable force in this crucial economic discussion.
