UPDATE: Jason Behrendorff has officially debuted for the Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League, marking a significant shift in his illustrious T20 career. The fast-bowling veteran, who previously starred for the Perth Scorchers, expressed mixed emotions stepping onto the field in red, saying it felt “different” to play his first game with a new franchise.
This pivotal moment comes as Behrendorff, with 180 T20 matches and 140 wickets for the Scorchers, embarks on a new chapter after signing a three-year contract with the Renegades. “I was actually quite nervous for my first game for the Renegades,” Behrendorff told The West Australian. His transition is not just about team dynamics; it signifies an opportunity for family stability and professional growth at the age of 35.
Behrendorff’s debut season has already shown promise. In just three games, he has taken four wickets, proving his swing bowling remains a formidable threat. “You’ve always got something to prove,” he stated, emphasizing his commitment to performing at an elite level. The experienced bowler is keen to share his knowledge with younger teammates, particularly with the addition of fellow former Scorcher, Andrew Tye, who joined the Renegades as a replacement player.
Mark your calendars for January 7, as the Renegades are set to face the Scorchers at Optus Stadium. Behrendorff eagerly anticipates this clash, expressing excitement about returning to his former home ground. “I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t circled it on the calendar,” he remarked.
The competition this season is tighter than ever, with nearly every team within one win of each other. Behrendorff believes this BBL season will be defined by fine margins, making each game crucial for playoff positioning. “We’ve played some really aggressive cricket, and that’s been a positive thing for our group,” he noted.
In addition to his playing responsibilities, Behrendorff is also exploring opportunities in commentary with Channel 7, a venture he enjoys and sees as a potential career path post-retirement. “I love being involved in cricket, and hopefully, that continues for a while yet,” he said.
As the Renegades prepare for their upcoming matches, including a derby against the Melbourne Stars on January 4, Behrendorff’s leadership and experience are poised to play a vital role in their pursuit of success in BBL|15.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as Behrendorff and the Renegades strive for victory on the field.
