UPDATE: The WA Country XI is facing significant challenges at the Australian Country Cricket Championships, currently taking place from January 3-10 in Busselton and Margaret River. Despite a strong start from Albany’s own Lincoln Joy, the team’s title hopes are hanging by a thread after two disappointing losses.
WA suffered a tough defeat against Victoria on Saturday, losing by 82 runs, followed by a nail-biting one-wicket loss to Queensland on Sunday. This puts immense pressure on the team, who are now desperately seeking to regain momentum in the tournament.
Joy, representing the Albany and Districts Cricket Association, managed to top-score with 46 runs from 68 balls in the 50-over match against Victoria. However, he battled illness and had to retire temporarily, showcasing both his resilience and the team’s struggle as WA was ultimately bowled out for 189 runs while chasing a target of 272 runs.
In a much-needed turnaround, WA clinched a 44-run victory over South Australia on Monday, thanks in part to an explosive century from captain Michael Tassone, who scored 106 runs off just 66 balls. Joy contributed with 18 runs from 16 deliveries, highlighting the team’s potential when firing on all cylinders.
However, WA’s fortunes turned again in their second T20 match on Monday, where they stumbled to 5-50 against New South Wales. The team is now in urgent need of a win to stay competitive, especially with upcoming matches against Queensland and Victoria on Wednesday, followed by a critical one-day clash with Tasmania on Thursday.
Fans and supporters are eagerly watching Joy and the WA squad as they seek to recover from their early setbacks. The pressure is on for the team to perform, with every match crucial in their quest for championship glory.
Stay tuned for further updates as WA aims to turn their fortunes around in this high-stakes tournament!
