Andrew “Beef” Johnston Thrives in Perth After Thumb Surgery

UPDATE: English golf star Andrew “Beef” Johnston has successfully spent the past 10 months in Perth, Australia, following critical thumb surgery. The former world No. 74 is now focused on making a strong comeback as he prepares for upcoming tournaments.

In March 2023, Johnston underwent surgery to repair two torn ligaments in his thumb, a procedure performed by renowned surgeon Dr. David Dyer. This surgery marked a turning point for Johnston, who has faced injury struggles for over five years. After initially planning a short visit, he and his family embraced the Perth lifestyle, opting to stay longer for his recovery.

“I got misdiagnosed back in Europe in November 2024,” Johnston revealed. “After visiting a doctor in Singapore, I learned about the torn ligaments in my thumb.” He shared that while vacationing in Perth, he serendipitously encountered a local family who recommended Dr. Dyer, leading to his decision for surgery.

Johnston’s determination to recover has been evident. “Everything was going so well in the first couple of months, so I thought, why would I change this?” he explained. He set his sights on competing in the Australian PGA and Australian Open at the end of November and December, feeling at home in Perth.

The 2016 Open Championship standout, who gained cult status after finishing tied for eighth, continues to hold full status on the DP World Tour. He is now gearing up to participate in the Webex Player Series event at Royal Fremantle Golf Club, which kicks off today.

“This is the best it’s been since the injury,” Johnston said, now ranked No. 775. “I need to get rounds under my belt, find my rhythm, and keep playing.” He expressed a deep connection to Perth, stating, “It’s going to be really hard to leave. Even my little one is asking when we’re coming back.”

Johnston’s journey illustrates the emotional impact of recovery and the ability to adapt to new environments. His family has fallen in love with Perth, emphasizing the importance of lifestyle balance in his return to golf.

As he gears up for competition, Johnston’s story serves as an inspiring reminder of perseverance in the face of adversity. Fans and fellow golfers alike are eager to see how his time in Perth will influence his performance in the upcoming events.

Stay tuned for more updates on Andrew “Beef” Johnston as he makes his way back onto the golf course and continues to embrace the vibrant lifestyle of Perth.
