James Cameron has pointed to an “anti-AI backlash” as a key reason for the lack of recognition received by Avatar: The Way of Water at the most recent Academy Awards. The film, which was released in 2022, garnered only three nominations and secured a single win for best visual effects. This contrasts sharply with the original Avatar, released in 2009, which received nine nominations and won three Oscars, including best picture and best director.
During a recent appearance on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, Cameron expressed his disappointment regarding the sequel’s performance. He stated, “I won’t say I wasn’t disappointed, but I will say that my analysis of it after the fact, seeing what happened with the writers strike and how everybody went to the mat over fear of AI.” He elaborated on this sentiment, suggesting that the film industry’s apprehension towards artificial intelligence negatively impacted perceptions of his work.
Cameron clarified that he did not incorporate generative AI in the production of Avatar: The Way of Water. He emphasized that the belief that the film might have relied on AI technology contributed to its lack of recognition. “We got hit by an anti-AI backlash on that, even though we don’t use the stuff! We’ve never used generative AI—there’s not one image in the new film that was created by generative AI,” he remarked.
The director acknowledged that while some may have genuinely felt the film was lacking, he believes the broader narrative surrounding AI played a significant role in its Oscar outcomes. “You can kind of write the script for that,” Cameron noted, alluding to the misunderstandings that may have arisen in the filmmaking community.
