HKUST Celebrates Naming of Yip Kit Chuen and Yuen Yuk Hing Talent Hub

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has officially named its new Talent Hub in the Main Academic Building after prominent philanthropists, Dr. Yip Kit-Chuen and Madam Yuen Yuk Hing. This recognition comes as a result of a significant donation from Dr. Yip, the founder of G.E.W. Corporation Limited, aimed at supporting the university’s ongoing development and commitment to excellence in education.

A naming ceremony took place at HKUST, attended by numerous dignitaries, including Dr. Yip Kit-Chuen and his family, as well as university officials such as Prof. Nancy IP, HKUST President, and Prof. Yike GUO, HKUST Provost. The event highlighted the collaborative spirit between the university and its supporters, emphasizing the importance of community engagement in fostering future generations.

During the ceremony, Dr. Yip expressed his views on philanthropy, stating, “‘Taking from society and giving back to society’ is the responsibility of entrepreneurs.” He further emphasized the importance of creating opportunities for young people, noting that HKUST has played a pivotal role in nurturing talent that contributes positively to society.

Prof. Nancy Ip acknowledged Dr. Yip’s generous donation, noting that it aligns with the tradition of Hong Kong entrepreneurs who actively engage in charitable efforts. She mentioned, “This donation will accelerate HKUST’s advancements in frontier areas such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and sustainable development.” Prof. Ip highlighted that the Talent Hub serves as a vital space for interaction among students, scholars, and visitors, and will stand as a tribute to Dr. and Mrs. Yip’s contributions to the university.

The new Talent Hub is poised to enhance HKUST’s educational environment, offering improved facilities for teaching and promoting interdisciplinary research. It is also expected to expand internship and innovation opportunities for students, ultimately contributing to the university’s goal of developing leaders in various fields.

Dr. Yip Kit-Chuen, a distinguished industrialist, built his business from the ground up, transforming G.E.W. into a significant global brand. His dedication to philanthropy is well recognized, particularly in the realms of education and community development in both Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland. His accolades include the World Outstanding Chinese Award in 2006 and the Industrialist of the Year Award in 2017.

The naming of the Talent Hub not only celebrates Dr. Yip’s achievements but also strengthens the partnership between HKUST and community leaders. As HKUST continues its mission to cultivate the next generation of innovators, this collaboration serves as a testament to the impact of philanthropy in higher education.
