Local Schools Receive $30,000 Grants to Boost Student Activity

Northern Bay College and Bell Park North Primary School are set to receive significant funding as part of the Victorian state government’s Active Schools initiative. Each institution will benefit from a grant of $30,000, aimed at enhancing the opportunities for students to engage in physical activities throughout their school day.

Launched in 2020, the Active Schools program has successfully distributed over $25 million to more than 500 schools across Victoria. This initiative is designed to equip every student with the skills and encouragement necessary to maintain an active lifestyle long after their school years.

Member for Lara, Ella George, highlighted the importance of this funding, stating, “These Active Schools grants will help local students at Northern Bay College and Bell Park North Primary thrive by delivering even more sports and activities throughout their day at school – in class, at recess and lunch time.” She emphasized that the initiative allows young people to discover sports or activities that resonate with them, which supports their overall health and wellness.

The grants can be utilized in a variety of ways. Past recipients have used their funding to enhance physical education programs, acquire new sports equipment, develop outdoor learning areas, improve playground facilities, and implement programs such as bicycle education and dance. These initiatives are aimed at fostering a culture of movement and activity, not just during physical education classes, but throughout the entire school day.

Minister for Community Sport, Ros Spence, remarked on the broader impact of the program, stating, “Every young Victorian deserves the chance to find their sport – whether that’s on the court, in the pool or on the bike track, these grants are opening doors to new opportunities.” The Active Schools initiative strives to create an environment where children are encouraged to be active, whether they are in the classroom, during breaks, or even while commuting to and from school.

By investing in the health and activity levels of students, the Victorian government aims to cultivate a generation that values physical fitness and well-being. The grants to Northern Bay College and Bell Park North Primary School are just a part of this larger commitment to promote an active lifestyle among young Victorians.
