Incoming NT Administrator Faces Backlash Over Controversial Remarks

The incoming administrator of the Northern Territory, David Connolly, has sparked controversy with inflammatory remarks about Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and First Nations people. In a speech delivered in 2024, Connolly suggested that First Nations individuals were “the main group responsible” for crime in the region, igniting significant backlash ahead of his official start in the role next month.

Connolly, who is set to become the representative of King Charles in the Northern Territory, was appointed by the territory’s Country Liberal chief minister, Lia Finocchiaro. His selection has drawn scrutiny, especially after social media posts resurfaced that featured derogatory comments about both First Nations and transgender communities. The posts, which were later deleted, included a controversial joke about the Greens related to domestic violence and disparaging remarks about Indigenous fire management practices.

The role of administrator is intended to be nonpartisan, yet concerns are escalating regarding Connolly’s outspoken nature and criticism of government policies. Geoffrey Watson, director of the Centre for Public Integrity, called for the government to reconsider Connolly’s appointment prior to his transition to Government House.

In a speech at the NT Cattlemen’s Association conference, Connolly criticized left-wing activists and expressed strong disapproval of Labor politicians, particularly targeting Albanese. He stated, “Anthony Albanese lied when elected, in saying that ‘no matter how you voted, the government he led would respect all of the people every day’.” Connolly further condemned Albanese’s proposal for a First Nations voice to parliament as “arrogant” and “ignorant,” associating crime issues in the territory with “soft Labor party policies” and a “weak judiciary.”

Connolly’s comments also included a controversial assertion regarding the history of crime in Australia. He stated, “The main group of people perpetrating these criminal actions have been in Australia for 60,000 years,” challenging the narrative that links crime to Australia’s colonial past.

In light of Connolly’s past statements, Finocchiaro has defended her nomination, asserting that he is a strong advocate for the cattle industry. Conversely, Selena Uibo, NT Labor leader, has urged a reevaluation of Connolly’s appointment, emphasizing that the administrator should represent all Territorians with “integrity, respect and political neutrality.”

While Connolly has not yet publicly addressed the controversy surrounding his previous statements, reports indicate that his social media account was deleted following inquiries from journalists. In December, following his appointment announcement, he claimed in an interview with the ABC’s Country Hour that he would refrain from expressing political opinions while in office, stating, “This position is not a political position.”

Despite the rising tensions, Finocchiaro expressed confidence in Connolly’s ability to prioritize the economic needs of the Northern Territory, suggesting that his leadership will resonate positively with the community. As the situation develops, many are watching closely to see how Connolly navigates his new role and the criticisms that accompany it.
